Kathie Chrisicos: Designing with Black

October 16, 2014

I always like to design a space that is not defined by a color but instead has well thought-out use of color that is part of the overall feel, look , and style of the room.

A hue that I feel works beautifully in many different settings is black. When it comes to choosing colors for interior design many people avoid black, but they shouldn't. Black is a neutral that can be used brilliantly throughout the home. It lends itself to many approaches—it can create effects that are dramatic, elegant, modern, or rustic.

The dominant color in these custom drapes is black. It is a striking way to frame a standard double hung window and pull the white wallpaper together with the copper ceiling. To keep a room feeling bright, allow light to bounce around the walls by choosing a white paint or paper.

Black can create a very dramatic effect, especially when paired with a pattern. In this room the concrete wall benefits from the bold black and white pattern-it brightens up the space while creating a modern, urban aesthetic.

The use of subtle black-tone paired with a bold black work nicely to join two transitional rooms. The subtlety of black is seen in the pattern of the window treatments and the deep espresso-finished wood furniture in the living room. The dramatic, bold black is seen in the black lacquer scroll coffee table and the wide striped roman shade in the adjoining study.

Black has many uses and understanding how to create different shades of black can add dimension and flair to your work. If the space you are decorating is small make sure to contrast it with light grey shades to create a more spacious aesthetic.
