Boston Made: Arts and Crafts Jewelry and Metalwork at the Museum of Fine Arts

The International Arts and Crafts movement spurred a renaissance of hand craftsmanship in Boston at the turn of the twentieth century. The city emerged as a vibrant jewelry-making and metalworking community. The movement is characterized by works featuring bold color, gemstones, enamels, and history-inspired designs. Join Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang, curator of American Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for a discussion about the Herter Brothers work on the William H. Vanderbilt’s Fifth Avenue mansion. The mansion, completed in 1882, was not only the grandest house in America of the time, but it was also the crowning achievement of Herter Brothers, the preeminent cabinetmakers and decorators of America’s Gilded Age.
