Modern Makeover
What happens with a big house when the kids go off to college? It gets bigger.
This family’s roomy house in Weston, Massachusetts, for years suited them just fine, but when the children went away to college, the parents found themselves alone in a too-big house. “The house was probably 6,900 square feet,” recalls the owner. “It had a huge finished basement, a mudroom, an office, a living room… even a basketball court outside. There were places in the house we didn’t even go when the kids were away. It was beautiful, but it was too big.”
Daunted by the amount of space for just the two of them, they started looking to downsize. The husband ran across a small ad in a local newspaper for a midcentury modern house in Lincoln. The picture was fuzzy and details were scarce, but he told his wife he thought they should take a look. “When we walked into the house I could immediately see its potential,” he says. “I said to my wife, ‘this is going to be fantastic.’ ”
