A savvy designer awakens the inherent beauty in her old Colonial Revival house with a do-over that emphasizes its classic good looks.

Katherine Hodge confesses to a penchant for falling for the least lovely house on the street. “Why buy something halfway decent if you can find something really bad and fix it up exactly the way you want?” asks the interior designer. For ten years she has worked largely in renovation design, with layout, cabinetry, kitchens and bathrooms her specialties.

Good relationships, we all know, build over time. With every year that passes, the bonds of friendship and trust strengthen. Case in point? After almost two decades of working together, the owners of this Wilton home are happily in sync with interior designers John Roch and Gary Chase of Fairfield’s Roch & Chase Interiors. The designers were on the scene before their client’s two children, who are long past nursery days, had even arrived.

When a son heeds his mother’s wise advice to take over her house, the result is a fresh new look for the lovely old home as well as a sense of continuity every generation welcomes.

Parental suggestions all too often fall by the wayside, but every once in a while a child recognizes sound advice when he hears it. Consider interior designer Parker Rogers’s story. He and his partner, Christopher William Philip, had been house hunting for years to no avail. Then, Philip’s mother stepped in to offer the perfect solution. The duo could buy her Southport, Connecticut, home. In a win-win situation, the sale would ensure that the lovely 1916 center-hall colonial would stay in the family and free her to purchase a more age-friendly nest for herself.

The stone and wood facade of this stately home may acquiesce to the architectural style of its nearby neighbors, but on the inside it has a modern spirit all its own.

A textile artist and her architect meld their talents to bring a weary old farm building back to life as a vibrant family home.

The tired barn in Westport hardly seemed habitable when architect Kraig Kalashian saw it for the first time. “It looked worn down and aged,” he remembers. “It had been converted to a residence but only in a very basic sense. It was set up in a very dysfunctional way. It looked like someone had installed drywall and that was it.”

With mindful planning, impeccable taste and a flair for the dramatic, an interior designer creates a show-stopping Greenwich home—her own.

The estate gates part slowly, like curtains on a stage, to reveal a class act: a courtyard and neatly manicured lawn framing a classic New England colonial, complete with porte cochère and double mahogany doors sheltered by a columned portico.

An intrepid couple and their simpatico design team give a 1960s contemporary a bold new look that fast-forwards it into the twenty-first century.

Their quest? Find the proverbial needle in a haystack. In a neighborhood of gorgeous classic homes, Tony and Anne Greenberg were searching for something different. “We wanted a contemporary house in the land of colonials,” quips Tony.

The couple’s hunt eventually circled back to the first dwelling their real estate agent had suggested: a rare 1960s design. Never mind that the structure warranted serious updating. The Fairfield County location was ideal and the backyard landscaping (pool included) was lovely.

With help from a talented design team, a couple moves from sky’s-the-limit flights of fancy to a solid design concept—and the house they were dreaming of all along.

When Bhinesh and Mina Patel moved from London to Darien, they let their imaginations run wild. “Unlike in England, we thought we were free to build any type of house we wanted,” says Bhinesh. “We had all kinds of crazy ideas in our heads. We looked at all kinds of fancy, very elaborate designs from Tuscan villas to French châteaux and from Georgian and Victorian to contemporary.”
