Residential Architecture
Firm Profile
Exceptional residential design and construction requires experience.
David Mullen, AIA, provides a unique situation—while
most firms have to separate tasks among several people, David
manages the full range of architectural services himself, maintaining a combination of art and technical ability that is often
lost in bigger firms. David studied at Wentworth Institute of
Technology and the Boston Architectural College, where he
graduated highest in his class and received a traveling scholarship
through Europe for his overall design ability. David
apprenticed in the old tradition at the prestigious Boston-based
firm of Perry Dean Rogers and Partners, and advancing in
experience, over time, became an associate, where he focused
on high-end residential work while learning the fundamentals
of design and construction.
Architectural style is a process. As David says, “Rather than
working toward any consistent style, I’m interested in finding
inspiration in the unique character of each project, whereby I
can integrate new work within the framework of an existing
residence, yet maintain a sense of contextual innovation.
The clients’ trust and involvement is the key to a successful
project. The wishes and requirements of the client need to be discussed and disseminated by the architect. The importance
of discovering what the client is not saying cannot be overstated
and is a significant part of the architect’s role in the design
process. However, most clients, although sure of what they
wish to achieve in terms of space and lifestyle, depend on the
architect to interpret this into a physical image.
This is where trust in the architect is essential.” David provides
this trust with great appreciation for clients that allow
him to do so.
